He disappeared in November 1909 while aboard his boat, Spray. In 1900, he wrote a book about his journey, Sailing Alone Around the World, which became an international bestseller. He was a Nova Scotian born, naturalized American seaman and adventurer, and a noted writer.

It will be welcomed by admirers of his legendary achievement. Joshua Slocum was the first man to sail single-handedly around the world. Slocum's account of his epic voyage is a classic of sailing literature, acclaimed as an unequalled masterpiece of vital yet disciplined prose. Starting from Boston in 1895, by the time he dropped anchor in Newport, Rhode Island over three years after his journey began, he had cruised some 46,000 miles entirely by sail and entirely alone. It remains one of the major feats of singlehanded voyaging, and has since been the inspiration for the many who have gone to sea in small boats.

Joshua Slocum's epic solo voyage around the world in 1895 in the 37 foot sloop Spray stands as one of the greatest sea adventures of all time. Captain Slocum simply went around the world in a one-man ship, 19 feet long, and kept me thoroughly entertained with the story of it.
